Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
630 AM EDT Wed Jul 20 2022
.SYNOPSIS…
A warm front is expected to lift north of the area today. This will
result in a period of hot and humid conditions across the region
through Thursday. A cold front will then cross the area late
Thursday then pass offshore Thursday night. High pressure located
across the western Atlantic will then dominate the pattern into the
weekend with prolonged southwesterly flow resulting in a quick
return of oppressive heat and humidity through the weekend. Chances
of showers and thunderstorms will return Sunday and especially
Monday as another cold front approaches the area from the north. The
cold front will finally bring some relief from the extended heat
wave into early next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/…
Continued warmth is expected across the region today as NJ remains
sandwiched between a mid-level low over the northern Great Lakes
and a mid-level wave across NC. Latest 850 MB 20.00z analysis
revealed a warm front extending across PA and DE which is forecast
to rapidly pull northeast this morning. Both the ECMWF and GFS have
850 MB temperatures surging to around 20 degrees C this afternoon,
and given the latest hand analysis this seems reasonable. 1000/ 850
MB thicknesses also expand to 1430 m this afternoon. All of the
above supports high temperatures 1 to 3 degrees higher today
compared to yesterday/ Tuesday. Widespread low to mid 90s across the
region appears likely today.
Today will start a multi-day stretch of high temperatures in the mid
to upper 90s with heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees F. The
latest forecast is for heat index values to come in right at or just
below 100 degrees this afternoon. Due to the above, a heat advisory
remains in effect today for the urban corridor as well as most of
central and northern NJ. No precipitation is expected.
Tonight, winds will be light out of the south with low temperatures
staying in the mid to upper 70s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/…
Dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected through Thursday.
Broad mid-level troughing arriving from the west early Thursday will
linger through much of Friday. At the surface, modest southwesterly
return flow will then prevail through Thursday advecting even warmer
temperatures and dewpoints into the region. A cold front, really
just a dewpoint gradient, will push into the area late Thursday then
move offshore overnight. The boundary will stall just south of the
area and linger there through much of Friday.
On Thursday, the mid-level trough and associated frontal boundary
will be approaching the area from the west. I suspect the guidance
is a little too progressive with this feature, but it will probably
begin pushing into the area by early to mid afternoon. While hot and
humid conditions are expected again for Thursday, the big question
is how much convection there will be as the day progresses. The
latest guidance suggests our area will remain largely dry with only
scattered cumulus developing. The area will be sandwiched between
the best forcing to the north over New England and the better
instability to the south. There will also be a dry slot pushing in
with the front, working against any successful initiation. Given
this disconnect, I suspect most areas will remain dry on Thursday.
There is still a chance for some isolated storms to develop into the
afternoon, particularly north/northeast of a line from Trenton to
Allentown and across portions of Delmarva where chance PoPs remain.
I have maintained at least slight chance PoPs elsewhere as well.
High temperatures mainly in the mid 90s are expected across the
region for Thursday. This combined with dewpoints surging into the
low to mid 70s will result in Heat Indices ranging from the upper
90s across our northwestern zones to the mid 100s near and southeast
of I-95. With the cold front arriving from the northwest into the
peak afternoon heating hours, dewpoints are expected to mix out just
enough to keep the Heat Index mostly under the 100 degree mark.
Elsewhere, confidence has increased that dangerously hot and humid
conditions will occur with Heat Indices in the 100 to 105 degree
range. The Excessive Heat Watch that was previously issue has been
replaced by a Heat Advisory for much of the area. Given that we are
highly confident in multiple consecutive days of advisory criteria
being met from now through Sunday with high temperatures in the mid
to upper 90s, we have extended the Heat Advisory for our Urban
Corridor through Sunday.
Another warm night is expected for Thursday night, but dewpoints
should generally begin to fall. Low temperatures are expected to
range from the mid 60s north of I-78 to the mid 70s near and
southeast of I-95.
Friday will see temperatures generally similar to that of Thursday
(low to mid 90s), however dewpoints will be some 10 degrees lower
(mostly in the 60s). Resulting Heat Indices are in the mid to upper
90s across much of the area. While conditions won`t be as oppressive
as Thursday, it will still be quite hot. The lower dewpoints and
drier mid-level air will result in an otherwise fair weather day
under sunny skies. Yet another warm night is expected for Friday
night with low temperatures expected to range from the mid to upper
60s north of I-78 to the mid 70s near and southeast of I-95.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/…
A mostly zonal flow pattern is anticipated Saturday through Tuesday
with a Bermuda High located across the western Atlantic. The
prevailing southwesterly flow will once again bring oppressively hot
and humid conditions to the region. The hottest and most oppressive
day is expected to be Sunday with Heat Indices climbing to around
100-105 across much of the area. Many areas will likely experience 7
or 8 days in a row of 90 degrees or hotter by the end of this heat
wave. Chances for showers and storms will return Sunday and
especially by Monday as the next system approaches from the north.
An approaching cold front bringing convection and increasing cloud
cover in the region should begin to provide some relief from the
heat into early next week.
