…Update to aviation forecast discussion…
Issued at 256 AM CST Sun Feb 27 2022
– A gradual warm-up is expected this week with highs reaching
the 60s and 70s Monday through Friday.
– Dry and warm conditions will create elevated fire weather
conditions through the week.
– Precipitation chances arrive Friday into Saturday.
Early this morning, an upper trough was present across the central
CONUS extending from the Great Lakes into the southern Plains with
ridging noted over the western states. Clear skies and light winds
have made for another cool morning with temperatures in the teens
and 20s. Despite the cold start, clear skies and westerly downslope
flow will work to boost temperatures into the mid 50s this
afternoon. A weak shortwave pushes through the Plains on Monday, but
a lack of moisture will preclude the development of precipitation
with little change in airmass behind this system. Persistent ridging
and increasing WAA will allow the warming trend to continue over the
next several days with highs in the 60s on Monday followed by highs
in the 70s Tuesday and Wednesday. For Thursday, a surface low
deepens on the lee of the Rockies ahead of a digging trough across
the western CONUS. Heights rise through the day Thursday with
increasing southerly flow keeping temperatures mild in the upper 60s
to mid 70s. As has been mentioned in previous discussions, fire
weather is the main concern through the middle of the week given the
dry and warm conditions. Refer to the Fire Weather section below for
The pattern changes late in the week as the western trough ejects
northeast across the Plains leading to increasing precipitation
chances late Friday into Saturday. The surface low is progged to
translate northeast through Nebraska and into the upper Midwest,
keeping the forecast area in the warm sector. As a result,
precipitation is expected to be all rain through the day Saturday
with guidance suggesting a few thunderstorms given the presence of a
couple hundred J/kg of CAPE.
.AVIATION…(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Monday morning)
Issued at 503 AM CST Sun Feb 27 2022
VFR conditions expected. West-southwest winds remain under 10kts
through the period.
Issued at 256 AM CST Sun Feb 27 2022
Dry and warm conditions today through midweek will lead to
increased fire weather concerns. Very high fire danger is expected
today across the entire area as relative humidity values fall to
15-20%. Winds will be the limiting factor with speeds generally
under 10-12 mph. Similar conditions are expected over the next
several days, although Tuesday looks to be have a better chance of
reaching Red Flag criteria due to stronger winds. Southerly winds
increase on Thursday with relative humidity remaining in the
upper teens to low 20s across the area, so that is another day
with increased concerns. Overall, high to very high fire danger
is anticipated each day through Thursday before moisture begins to
return to the area.
