Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Seattle WA
212 AM PDT Wed Jul 20 2022
.SYNOPSIS…A ridge will be across the area through tonight for
warm, dry weather. An upper low will move through Thursday night
and on Friday for increasing clouds and cooler weather. Ridging
will build over the area this weekend. A significant ridge next
week will bring hot temperatures and dry weather.
.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY/…Clouds along the coast this
morning will slide into areas of the southern Puget Sound and
Strait of Juan de Fuca with weaker onshore flow. Clouds across the
interior will clear relatively quickly through this morning, with
clouds along the coast for much of today. Temperatures into the
low to mid 80s for the interior today, with 60s along the coast.
The ridge will slowly shift out of the area tonight into Thursday
for increasing onshore flow. Additional clouds Thursday morning
will clear for the interior with cooler temperatures.
Increasing onshore flow Thursday night into Friday will bring
widespread stratus across the area during the morning and into the
afternoon on Friday. Drizzle possible along the coast in the
morning. At least some clearing Friday afternoon, with cooler
temperatures into the upper 60s and mid 70s.
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/…Weak trough will be over
the area into Saturday morning for additional morning clouds, and
further clearing during the afternoon. Temperatures near normal on
Saturday. Ridging will slowly build into the area on Sunday for
dry weather and temperatures warming into the upper 70s and low
80s. A significant ridge will build offshore Monday and slide over
the Pacific Northwest through next week. Ensemble/guidance are
mainly consistent in temperatures warming rather quickly Monday,
with highs in the 80s to low 90s. Temperatures will warm further
Tuesday and into mid-week with highs in the upper 80s to upper 90s
Tuesday. HeatRisk concerns, especially for those without adequate
cooling or hydration much of next week. JD
.AVIATION…Upper level ridging with onshore flow in the low levels
today. VFR conditions will be the general rule aside from morning
stratus both Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Stratus this morning
will affect mainly the Coast, Lower Chehalis Valley, and Strait of
Juan de Fuca. Some stratus may approach terminals around Puget Sound
between 13-16z but should remain FEW-SCT. Winds light and variable
this morning will become more S/SW this afternoon 5-7kts and may
shift more W/NW towards evening.
KSEA…VFR thru the period. Some stratus may approach from the south
and west this morning around 14z and linger for a few hours. Similar
conditions likely Thursday morning. N wind slow to calm early this
morning around 10kts will become more W/SW through the day today 5-
.MARINE…Surface analysis this morning depicts high pressure
offshore with lower pressure inland over E WA, resulting in onshore
flow. Elevated winds over the coastal waters earlier last evening
have subsided, allowing the short-fuse SCA to expire. SCA level
winds continue down the Central Strait of Juan de Fuca and the East
Entrance and will remain near threshold levels for several more
hours. Marine stratus continue to develop along the Coast and down
the Strait. Areas of low clouds will also likely reach portions of
southern and northern Puget Sound.
Onshore flow will continue for much of the next week as high
pressure remains offshore. An upper level trough will approach on
Thursday and will likely make for SCA level winds over portions of
the coastal and offshore waters and will likely also be responsible
for gale force winds down the Strait Thursday night into Friday
morning as it passes across the area.
Thereafter, expect the main marine headline to be diurnal westerly
pushes down the Strait resulting in SCA level winds. Swells over the
7 days will range from 4-6ft.

start of the next rainy season; it will only be updated as needed
