The oppressive heat continues across the Mid-South. Temperatures
are still sitting near 80 degrees even as of 5AM this morning. The
heat will only get worse today as hot, moist air continues to
funnel in from the south thanks to warm advection. Excessive Heat
Warnings remain in effect today and have been expanded to the rest
of our Tennessee Counties. These counties under an EHW today will
likely see afternoon heat indices ranging from 110-115F degrees.
Elsewhere (northeast Mississippi), the Heat Advisory continues as
heat indices top out around 105-109F degrees today.
A few showers and thunderstorms are possible late this evening as a
front makes its way down from the Great Lakes area. The timing of
this FROPA is such that the environment may become capped long
before convection is able to tap into any instability and fire up
along the boundary, but some of these storms may become strong. If
stronger thunderstorms were to come to fruition late tonight into
the overnight hours, the primary threat would be isolated damaging
The aforementioned front will most likely stall out somewhere just
south of the TN/MS border in the late afternoon to early evening
tomorrow. The timing and location of said front will make or break
heat indices across the area tomorrow as dewpoints will either sink
with drier air behind the front or soar as they pool along the
boundary. Global and ensemble models are still split on the amount
of mixing we`ll get tomorrow and CAMs are still a little too far out
to put much confidence in their guidance. Heat indices could range
from the upper 90s in the MO Bootheel to 110F+ down in the
Mississippi Delta, depending on that FROPA. Thus, we didn`t make the
call for which heat products to issue tomorrow just yet. As more
reliable data comes in today and confidence increases, subsequent
forecast packages will decide on tomorrow`s heat headlines.
Another chance for isolated strong thunderstorms will be possible
late tomorrow afternoon as that frontal boundary lingers across
north Mississippi and tries to keep sinking south. The brunt of
the instability and forcing looks to be more in middle Mississippi
to Alabama, but a couple storms may be able to tap into some
diurnally driven instability and produce some isolated damaging
winds tomorrow afternoon in the southern part of our CWA.
We return to widespread triple digit temperatures by Friday as a
warm front lifts north and turns the Mid-South into a swamp for
the next several days. We also have a 594dam bubble at 500mb that
will park itself over the Tennessee Valley and make it difficult
to break from this heat pattern for at least a week. A cold front
or two may try to swing down and break down the upper ridge early
next week, but the it`s more likely that it would stall out to the
north before offering any relief. There could be afternoon
showers and storms for a select lucky few each day, but the vast
majority of the extended forecast is hot and dry.
Winds have finally relaxed a bit after a fairly windy night for
July. However, south to southwest winds should increase once
again during the day today. Sustained speeds should be 10-15kt
with gusts to 20kt. A few showers may approach JBR and MEM late
this afternoon into the evening showers. Will include VCSH at JBR
and MEM accordingly. Wind should relax to 5-10kt tonight. A weak
front is expected to move into the Midsouth tomorrow, MEM should
see a wind shift from the north before 18Z.
