AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Morristown TN
908 AM EST Sun Feb 27 2022
Minor changes made the the forecast this morning. Adjusted PoP
chances to reflect current radar returns and made very minor
changes to the timing of the precipitation exiting the region.
There have been a few ground reports of light wintry precipitation
in northeast TN and southwest VA this morning, but expect this to
be the exception rather than the norm. Temperatures are slowly
warming across the area at the same time precipitation is exiting.
12Z TAF DISCUSSION.
A low confidence forecast at CHA and TYS through early afternoon
as CIGs have been bouncing between IFR and VFR over the past few
hours. All guidance suggest IFR CIGs so will go with prevailing
IFR with a tempo for MVFR from 12z to 16Z. Periods of VFR
conditions are also possible. Conditions improve to VFR later this
afternoon into the evening hours as precip exits east.
TRI will transition from VFR to MVFR within the next few hours
then will return to VFR by mid afternoon.

SHORT TERM…SHORT TERM…(Today and Tonight)…
1. Rain moves across most of the area. A rain/snow mix possible
near the KY/TN/VA line early this morning. No impacts from snow.
2. Light snowfall accumulations up to a few tenths of an inch
possible across the northeast TN Mountains. Perhaps a trace for
the northern Cumberland Plateau and VA mountains.
Surface high pressure remains to our north and a shortwave is moving
across just to our south. Rain will continue to spread into our area
from southwest to northeast through mid morning and then begin to
exit to the east during the early afternoon. Highest POPs are
general along I-40 and southward toward the southern TN Valley and
southwest NC. POPs decrease north of I-40 toward the TN/KY/VA line.
With temperatures mainly in the upper 30s, rain is expected for
most. However, a brief period of a rain/snow mix is possible near
the TN/KY border and into VA where temps will be in the low to
mid 30s. Remember though, QPF will be lightest across these areas.
No snow accumulation expected other than possible trace amounts
across the northern Cumberland Plateau and VA mountains and few
tenths of an inch in the mountains of northeast TN.
According to the latest runs of the HRRR, the bulk of the precip
should be gone by 18Z with only a few light sprinkles lingering
south of I-40 through late afternoon. Clearing skies are expected
tonight with low temps ranging from the upper 20s to low 30s.
LONG TERM…(Monday through Saturday)…
1. Dry for the much of the extended period with a warming trend.
2. A few showers may arrive by Saturday.
We start the period under a broad low amplitude trough aloft
situated over the Eastern U.S. This trough will persist through mid
week but will give way to an upper ridge building over the region
later Thursday into Friday. At the surface high pressure will be
over the area to start then will shift east. A weak cold front will
sag toward the area from the north Wednesday/Thursday, but will
struggle to make much progress and will likely stall to our north.
Dry weather can be expected for nearly all of the long term period,
and temperatures will warm from near normal Monday to significantly
above normal by the latter part of the week.
A cold front is forecast to be approaching the Mississippi Valley
Saturday, and increasing southwesterly flow may bring enough
moisture for a few showers over our area Saturday, although model
trends suggest the precipitation may hold off until later. Will
include no more than slight chance PoPs Saturday for now.
