Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Grand Forks ND
631 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022
.SHORT TERM…(Today through Thursday)
Issued at 340 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022
Northwest flow aloft prevails today into Thursday, with a
progressive shortwave expected to traverse the region this
afternoon. Impacts across the short-term will depend upon the
development of high-base thunderstorms today, as highlighted by the
HREF as well as individual CAMs. Soundings show dry air at the
surface, with dew points in the 50s to near 60 degrees. With
afternoon highs expected to reach into the 80s to near 90 degrees,
this gives us an inverted V type sounding during peak heating. Any
thunderstorm development along the shortwave axis will have the
potential for downburst winds or dry microbursts. The best chances
are expected to occur in eastern North Dakota, with lower chances
for west-central Minnesota.
Heading into the overnight hours, temperatures will fall quickly
into the 50s to near 60 degrees. A stray shower or t-storm is
possible for portions of west-central Minnesota and is expected to
clear shortly after midnight. Thursday brings dry and quiet weather
to the region with highs in the 80s.
.LONG TERM…(Thursday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 340 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022
Impacts and concerns in the extended will be related to the
relatively low precip chances associated with hard to time and
resolve weak impulses moving across the region within rather
persistent NW flow aloft. The highest PoPs, associated with the
strongest wave, is at the end of the 7 day forecast with ensembles
depicting a short wave in the Monday or Tuesday time frame and
showing a 30 to 40 percent chance of precip. Before that precip
chances are limited to a Friday night or Saturday morning 15 to 30
percent chance as a weak upper wave revolves around Hudson Bay low
for upper support. A return of deep moisture is not expected ahead
of this feature with with MLCAPE of 1000 to 1500J/kg. As the cold
front pushes through the area Friday night into Saturday morning
high temps will go from mid 80s to low 90s on Friday to mid and
upper 70s for the weekend. Max temps will rebound Monday and Tuesday
into the 80s ahead of the next wave.
&&
.AVIATION…(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning)
Issued at 626 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022
VFR conditions prevail at all TAF sites this morning. Impacts to
aviation today will surround the possibility for isolated strong
to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Chances remain
relatively low at this time; however, if any high-based
thunderstorms are able to form, downburst winds and hail would be
the primary risk. KDVL, KGFK, and KFAR have the best chances for
seeing thunderstorm development, albeit with low confidence in the
exact initiation point.
