Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
925 AM EST Sun Feb 27 2022
Low pressure passes to our north and drags a cold front through the
area late this evening into tonight. High pressure then builds in
through Monday night. A couple of clipper lows will then move
across from Tuesday through Wednesday night, with high pressure
building back in for Thursday through Saturday.
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/…
The fcst is on track. High pressure nosing in from our west
breaks down this morning as a cold front approaches. This cold
front extends down from a low pressure system that will pass to
our north. As the cold front approaches, W-SW wind strengthen
and gusts 30-35 mph are possible by the afternoon. This will
result in a strong downslope flow and combined with sunny skies
will allow for highs to reach the mid to upper 40s.
The cold front will begin to pass through the area late this
evening. Behind it arctic air builds in. With the passing of the
front a few snow showers are possible for the northern half of
the area. Guidance is actually showing less of a signal for snow
squalls than it was yesterday. The best and most organized
activity likely stays well north of our area mostly due to the
timing of the frontal passage. Farther south, across Long Island
and NYC, have limited the wording to just flurries in the
forecast because of this expected weakening activity.
Strong cold advection kicks in behind the frontal passage, with
dew points dropping to the low single digits by late tonight.
Lows forecast to be in the mid 10s to mid 20s.
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/…
High pressure builds in behind the departing cold front and settles
over the area by Monday evening. Clear skies are expected all day,
with below average temperatures, highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s.
Winds will be decreasing through the day with a weakening pressure
gradient, but the first half of the day could feature enough wind to
make temperatures feel like the 10s. With high pressure overhead and
mostly clear skies, most of Monday night will feature excellent
radiational cooling conditions. The interior and LI Pine Barrens
could reach the low 10s.
High pressure moves offshore by Tuesday morning and a return flow
will help advect warmer and more moist air into the area. Off to our
west a piece of northern stream energy and surface clipper system
approach. This will allow cloud cover to increase and winds to
strengthen as the pressure gradient tightens. Dry weather is
expected throughout the day on Tuesday, with highs around normal for
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/…
Center of the clipper low will be to our north Tuesday night, but an
associated cold front will still provide some lift. Limited moisture
noted by the models, so only a slight chance of a rain shower for
far eastern portions of the forecast area during the evening – maybe
mixed with snow over interior SE CT.
Zonal flow aloft and weak surface ridging for Wednesday will keep us
dry. Models now in somewhat better agreement that another clipper
passes through or nearby during Wednesday night. Slight chance to
chance PoPs for this period with mainly rain showers at the coast
and a wintry mix inland.
High pressure builds in for Thursday and Friday before moving
offshore on Saturday. Dry conditions expected for the period.
.AVIATION /14Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/…
A cold front approaches today and passes through early in the
W flow around 10 kt reaches15-20G25-30kt by late morning/afternoon.
Winds then then veer NW after 00Z-03Z behind the cold front.
…NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty…
