.PREV DISCUSSION… /ISSUED 217 AM CST Sun Feb 27 2022/

SHORT TERM (Today through Monday)…

Areas to the east of I-35 still could see the opportunity for some
light rain or drizzle over the next several hours up until just a
little after sunrise. Otherwise, drier air advects into the region
from the north as reinforcing surface high pressure builds across
the state. This results in clearing skies from north to south this
morning. Most of the region will see clear skies by the noon hour
except for those in our furthest south counties. These areas would
clear out in the early afternoon. With greater solar radiation from
the sunshine, expect for the temperatures to finally be able to see
a good warmup where afternoon highs range from the mid 50s to the
mid 60s. With the drier air along with moderate northerly winds
averaging around 10 to 15 mph, a localized pocket of possible
elevated fire weather conditions may develop in the afternoon for
areas to the west near the Rio Grande and to the north in the Hill
Country.

The northerly winds will weaken this evening and this will promote
effective radiational cooling tonight into Monday morning with the
clear skies. Overnight lows will drop to around or below freezing
for the majority of the area except for those inside the main city
centers of Austin/San Antonio and those immediately along the Rio
Grande. The lower lying valleys across the Hill Country likely see
overnight lows in the mid 20s. Temperatures quickly warm through
Monday morning into Monday afternoon with prevalent sunshine. The
afternoon highs top out in the 60s with a few locations across the
Rio Grande reaching 70 degrees. The winds will trend lighter with
directions developing a more easterly component into and through
Monday afternoon.

LONG TERM (Monday Night through Saturday)…

After a fairly active and cold period the long term will be
characterized with a mostly dry and warming trend with afternoon
highs in the 60s and 70s.

To start the long term surface high pressure will be squarely in
place over much of the state of Texas leading to light winds and fair
conditions. For Monday night overnight lows will still be in the 30s
over much of the area, but should be above freezing. Overnight lows
will warm throughout the long term, with no sub 32 degree temps
forecast Monday Night onward. The surface ridge will begin to shift
eastward late in the day on Thursday into Friday allowing for
southerly and southeasterly flow to return, bringing back moisture
into South Central Texas. Through the end of the week the most
exciting part of the long term would be the decaying upper trough
that will move across Texas Tuesday through Wednesday afternoon. This
may increase mid-level moisture just enough to produce some mid and
upper level clouds over these two days. On the heels of this decaying
trough another upper ridge builds over the area leading to fair
weather to end the week for Thursday and Friday. With the return of
the Gulf moisture and the subtropical ridge in place afternoon highs
will climb into the mid 70s and likely the 80s in some spots.

Models still show a pattern change coming at the end of the long
term. A strong trough will dig into the Southwestern US. While this
disturbance ejects into the Central Plains models do show some shower
activity across areas east of I-35 thanks to the warm and moist
environment. There is also a hint of the West Texas dryline becoming
active, especially across North Texas. Current model soundings though
show a large inversion with a decent amount of CIN which could result
in not much activity at all. With this being the Day 7 and 8 forecast
models have a few days to paint a clearer picture about next weekend.
Until then pleasant Spring weather will be in place across South
Central Texas.
