Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Duluth MN

.DISCUSSION…(Today through Tuesday)
Issued at 300 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022

Summary: A quieter and slightly cooler pattern is expected for the
remainder of the week. Rain chances return heading into the
weekend as temperatures remain near to slightly above normal.

Low pressure was centered over the Twin Ports early this morning
with an area of showers pinwheeling around the low. This low will
slowly move to the east as the day progresses bringing an end to
the showers from west to east by this afternoon. A few rumbles of
thunder cannot be ruled out, but no strong or severe storms are
expected. Highs will range from the middle 70s to middle 80s. A
weak shortwave in the northwest flow regime aloft may lead to the
development of an area of showers and storms this evening across
the eastern Dakotas which will then move to the southeast. If this
complex of storms develops, it may clip our far southwestern
zones, but most of the activity looks to remain to our south and
west. The ECMWF is a lot more subtle with this feature than the
GFS/NAM and doesn`t show much in the way of convective
development. CAMs do show some activity, but placement is all over
considering the weakly forced nature.

Dry conditions take over for Thursday as high pressure moves
through the region. Another ripple in the northwest flow aloft
moves through for Friday and may lead to a few showers, but the
bulk of this activity looks to split the Northland with the better
forcing to the south and north. The next wave, however, looks to
move closer to to the area and bring a chance for showers and
storms Friday night into Saturday. There may be a chance for a few
stronger storms on Saturday, but timing and placement remain in
question and the main focus may end up to our south. Additional
chances for rainfall will be seen into next week as the
progressive pattern remains in place. Temperatures will remain
near to slightly above normal resulting in highs in the 70s and
80s. Friday looks to be the warmest day of the period with upper
80s to near 90 possible in southern area.

.AVIATION…(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning)
Issued at 632 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022

The area of low pressure continues to drift to the east this
morning with mainly MVFR to IFR conditions in place across the
region with light showers and lingering low clouds. Conditions are
expected to improve from west to east through the day with VFR
conditions for all by this afternoon. Winds will be breezy from
the west-northwest today with gusts to 20 to 25 knots before
diminishing after sunset. VFR conditions will then prevail through
the night as high pressure builds in. However, there still remains
a chance for an isolated shower or thunderstorm in the Brainerd
area late this evening, but confidence on this occurring remains
low.

.MARINE…
Issued at 300 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022

Southwesterly winds will slowly become northwesterly this
afternoon at 10 to 15 knots with gusts to 20 to 25 knots. Gusts do
not seem widespread enough to warrant Small Craft Advisories, but
will have to be monitored in case winds are stronger than
expected. A few showers and perhaps a rumble of thunder will
linger into the this afternoon. Winds Thursday will be
southwesterly at 10 to 15 knots with gusts to 20 knots,
