Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX
340 AM CST Sun Feb 27 2022

.SHORT TERM [Today through Monday/Tomorrow Night]…

While the more organized bands of light rain have moved out to the
NE this morning, areas of drizzle along with persistent low clouds
are keeping things on the dreary side across SE TX. However, there
does appear to be an end in sight. Extrapolated timing of the back
edge of the overcast clouds has the line at/near the Brazos Valley
around mid morning or so (14-15Z)…around noon (17-18Z) for Htown
proper and then at the coast shortly thereafter (19-20Z). But with
that being said, we could still have some issues with high temper-
atures this afternoon should this clearing line either slows down/
speeds up. For now, have lowered NBM numbers almost a category for
today, especially for our southern CWA. That is going with mid and
upper 50s north and lower and mid 50s south for highs.

With the skies finally clearing and winds decreasing in response to
high pressure building over the state, very cold temperatures will
be on tap for tonight. Locations generally north of the US-59/I-69
corridor (excluding the Houston metro) should see freezing to just
below freezing temperatures overnight/early tomorrow morning. Lows
elsewhere inland should range from the mid to upper 30s…lower to
mid 40s expected at the immediate coast.

The quiet/dry pattern will continue tomorrow/tomorrow night as the
strong surface high lingers over the region and flat/weak ridging a-
loft develops. Temperatures will be warming tomorrow given the all
increased sun with highs in the lower and mid 60s. As for tomorrow
night, we`re still looking for a decent cooldown once again as the
skies remain clear and winds light. Lows should range from the mid
and upper 30s north…upper 30s to around 40 south…and the upper
40s along the local beaches. 41

.LONG TERM [Tuesday Through Sunday]…

A gradual warming trend can be expected for the remainder of the week
and on into next weekend. High pressure at the surface remains in
control through Thursday then moves off to the east at the end of
the week. Deepening Southern Plains low pressure at the end of the
week and over the weekend will help to strengthen the area`s onshore
winds. With a strengthening southwest flow aloft, we`ll eventually
have enough moisture and lift for some rain to return to the forecast
(mainly during the daytime hours on Saturday and Sunday).

The upward temperature trend starts with highs in the 60s on Tuesday,
in the 70s Wednesday through Friday then in the 70s/80s over the
weekend. Lows in the 30s/40s Wednesday morning will be in the 50s/60s
over the weekend. 42

&&

.MARINE…

Moderate to occasionally strong north to northeast winds and elevated
seas can be expected through the rest of the weekend. Caution flags
are up for the Bays this morning, caution flags are up for the 00-20
nm waters through Monday morning (they might need to be upgraded to
an Advisory) and advisory flags are up for the 20-60 nm waters through
Monday morning. Slowly improving conditions can be expected for the
winds and seas beginning late tonight and Monday as high pressure settles
into the region. An onshore flow returns to the area Thursday night
and Friday and is expected to strengthen into next weekend as the high
moves off to the east and low pressure deepens over the Southern Plains.
We might end up dealing with some sea fog toward the end of the week.

.AVIATION [12Z TAF Issuance]…

We`ll be starting this next TAF package with widespread IFR CIGs a-
cross all of SE TX with the main forecast issue going forward being
the timing of the clearing line approaching from the north. Current
extrapolated timing has this line at/near CLL between 14-15Z…then
IAH/HOU between 17-18Z…GLS around 19-20Z. All this is assuming no
slow down/delays. Current TAFs seem to be on track with this timing
and not expecting any major changes with these ongoing trends going
forward. VFR for all terminals by this evening/tonight. 41

&&

.CLIMATE…

Houston/Hobby set a low maximum temperature record yesterday
(February 26th) when their high for the day only reached 44
degrees. This tied the old record of 44 degrees set in 2003.
Hobby`s normal high temperatures for this date is 70 degrees.
