The Subtropical Ridging from near the Four Corners region to over
the Southern Plains persists today and Thursday. Subsidence under
the Ridge combined with slightly below seasonal normal moisture
levels (PWs) will keep rain out of the forecast.
Heat remains the main concern. Models show subtle increase in lower
level level thicknesses and 925-850 MB temperatures today, then
decrease on Thursday. Today will be the hottest day of the forecast
period. High temperatures above 100 are expected today, except for
isolated higher elevations of the Hill Country with upper 90s. Will
maintain the Excessive Heat Warning for the I-35 corridor, as well
as Burnet and Llano counties where many areas will have highs 105+
and Heat Advisory elsewhere through early this evening. With slight
thermal ridge “cooling” and slightly delayed mixing due to increased
lower level moisture, expect highs on Thursday to be 1 to 3 degrees
“cooler”. Will hold off on any heat highlights for Thursday, for
now, although, expect later forecasts will issue a Heat Advisory for
parts of our area.
Elevated to near critical fire weather conditions continue each day
with lowering humidities and breezy/gusty winds during the afternoon
into evening hours. This has resulted in a few new fires each day.
Additional fire danger statements may be needed.
With Excessive Heat/Heat Advisory conditions today and at least Heat
Advisory conditions likely on Thursday, heat safety messages are
– Check in on friends and family. This especially includes loved
ones that belong to vulnerable populations, such as those who are
young, elderly, pregnant, or dealing with chronic illness. These
groups are less able to regulate temperatures properly, so do your
part to ensure everyone is well equipped enough to withstand the
heat safely. This means having access to air conditioning as much
as possible and plenty of water available.
– Stay hydrated and limit time spent outdoors, especially during
peak heating! Dehydration can occur quickly in these temperatures.
Drink cool water and take shaded and/or air conditioned breaks if
you have to be outside.
– Always check the back seat! NEVER leave a child or pet in a hot
car. Temperatures climb quickly, so every minute matters. If you see
a pet or a child in a car, locate the owner and/or call 9-1-1!
– Understand and be able to recognize heat-related illness signs and
symptoms. If you become concerned about yourself or someone else,
immediately move the person to a cooler area and provide cool water.
Know when to seek medical attention for heat exhaustion or heat

The bad news first: Still no signs for rain for most of the region
over the next week. Some sea-breeze convection could bring a few
spots in our far southeastern Coastal Plains areas some low-end rain
chances this weekend into next week as the ridge weakens.
The good news: The ridge weakens some! While temperatures are still
forecast to be near or slightly above average Friday and beyond,
they won`t be quite as oppressive as we`ve had for much of this
month. (hey, i`m trying to look on the bright side here, give me a
Thursday night into Friday, the ridge axis over the northern Rockies
will begin to flatten, and heights across the CO/NM region will
lower to ~594 dm by Friday night. The ridge will bifurcate some, and
then become decreasingly defined to our NW while increasingly
defined over the mid-south as we head into next week. While this
will lead to mid-level flow out of the E across the Nrn gulf, it`s
not clear whether any disturbances in that flow will reach south-
central TX. Ensembles suggest only very low chances for rain over
the east half of our region towards the middle of next week. Highs
through the week will be in the mid 90s to low 100s, with lows in
