.PREV DISCUSSION… /Issued 432 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022/

SHORT TERM (Today through Thursday)…

An upper ridge is expected to remain centered over the Four
Corners Region today and extend to TX, with a weak upper level
trough with axis approximately parallel to the TX coast. PWAT
values are predicted to remain below normal during the period
(deterministic NAM/GFS/ECMWF), and thus convection not
anticipated, upper trough notwithstanding. Anticipate maximum
Heat Index values 105-117F across the CWA today, in general
agreement with the NBM 2-meter T/Td output. Will retain the Heat
Advisory, yet upgraded to Excessive Heat Warning for Jim Wells,
Nueces, and Kleberg counties, with maximum Heat Index values
115-117F anticipated. Expect maximum Heat Index values 100-109F
over the barrier islands. The foregoing upper trough is predicted
to dissipate tonight/Thursday, while the upper ridge continues to
influence conditions over the CWA.

LONG TERM (Thursday Night through Tuesday)…

The extended forecast will remain heavily influenced by a broad mid-
level ridge centered near the Four Corners region on early morning
water vapor imagery. Deeper monsoonal moisture and embedded
vorticity maxima rotating around the periphery of this feature is
resulting in early morning shower and thunderstorm activity across
portions of northeastern New Mexico and the Texas and Oklahoma
Panhandles.

Big deal, right? Why should South Texas care? Inspection of 00Z
guidance indicates that one of these vorticity maxima, or
disturbances, embedded in the larger clockwise flow around this mid-
level ridge will rotate across the western half of Texas Thursday
through Saturday. This will occur as a weak inverted trough shifts
westward under the larger ridge from the Gulf of Mexico. The arrival
of both of these features will result in some minor changes from
what the region has been experiencing the past few days:

– Decreasing mid-level heights over the region with the approach of
these two features will allow for temperatures to actually drop a
few degrees while remaining in the 90s to low 100s. It will still be
hot with heat index values in the 105-109 range, but not quite as
hot as it feels now.
– Slightly deeper moisture coincident with the arrival of the
inverted trough from the Gulf on Saturday (coastal precipitable
water values increase to near seasonal normals around 1.7-1.8
inches) will help lower convective condensation levels… and the
corresponding temperatures needed for clouds to form. This means
that a few more cumulus clouds are expected to dot the Coastal
Plains Friday through the upcoming weekend.
– Lower convective temperatures, particularly on Saturday, will
increase the potential for deeper convection (e.g. a non-severe
thunderstorm or two) to form over the weekend. Have added a mention
of thunderstorms to the Victoria Crossroads as a result, but cannot
rule additional thunderstorms developing across the Brush Country if
the vorticity maxima from the west materializes. Later forecasts may
need to introduce low rain chances farther southwest and west of the
Victoria Crossroads.

The main forecast takeaway is that hot and generally dry conditions
are expected to continue into the middle of the upcoming week when
the arrival of another inverted trough brings low rain chances to
coastal areas. However, there is at least a weak signal for a few
thunderstorms to develop within the region over the upcoming weekend.

MARINE…

Expect moderate onshore flow to persist today through Thursday,
owing to a significant MSLP gradient in response to low surface
pressure over western TX. A weak upper level trough of low
pressure, with axis approximately parallel to the TX coast, not
expected to contribute to convection owing to limited moisture.
A typical summertime pattern will persist across the bays and
Gulf waters Thursday night and beyond with light to moderate
onshore flow prompting Small Craft Should Exercise Caution
statements at times. Isolated showers may develop across the
waters Saturday morning and again towards the middle of next week.
