Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
957 AM EST Sun Feb 27 2022

.SYNOPSIS…
A cold front extended across the Great Lakes early this
morning. The boundary will progress to the southeast and it
should pass through our region this evening. High pressure is
expected to follow for Monday. Low pressure is forecast to slide
from the eastern Great Lakes on Tuesday to Atlantic Canada on
Wednesday. The low should pull a cold front through our area on
Tuesday night. Another cold front is anticipated on Thursday
with high pressure arriving its wake for Friday. A warm front is
expected to approach from the southwest and south on Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/…
High clouds associated with an upper level jet have mostly moved
off to the south this morning. Expect a few mid-level cumulus
this afternoon with an otherwise breezy day with westerly flow
over the region ahead of a cold front that will move over the
region this evening.

Surface high pressure will continue to slowly lose its
influence over our weather today as a cold front approaches from
the northwest. The front is anticipated to pass through our
region this evening. It will be accompanied by some clouds.
Also, there is a chance of snow showers in the Poconos. It is
possible that some snow showers may reach parts of the Lehigh
Valley and northwestern New Jersey, as well.

A west wind is anticipated to increase to around 15 MPH for
this afternoon and there should be gusts of 25 to 30 MPH at that
time. The wind speeds are forecast to diminish a bit after
sunset. However, with the arrival of the cold front the wind is
expected to shift to the northwest and speeds will likely
increase back into the 10 to 15 MPH range with gusts around 20
to 25 MPH.

Temperatures will rise slightly above normal today in advance
of the cold front. Highs should range from near 40 on the Pocono
Plateau to the lower 50s on much of the coastal plain. Lows
tonight will likely favor the teens and 20s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/…
The weather is forecast to be relatively uneventful for the
period from Monday into Tuesday night.

Cold high pressure is expected to build down from the Great
Lakes for Monday.

A couple short wave troughs traveling in the mid level flow are
anticipated to to pass overhead, one late on Monday night and
the other late on Tuesday.

An increase in cloud cover is expected on Monday night in the
warm advection ahead of the first short wave. Most of the clouds
should lift to our northeast on Tuesday morning. Temperatures
are forecast to return to being slightly above normal on Tuesday
afternoon.

Additional clouds are likely with the second short wave late on
Tuesday, with a cold front passing through our region on
Tuesday night.

The short wave troughs and the cold front are not forecast to
be accompanied by any precipitation.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/…
The brisk northwesterly mid level flow is expected to bring
another short wave trough over our region on Wednesday night. We
will mention a chance of snow showers and rain showers in the
Poconos, the Lehigh Valley and northern New Jersey in advance of
the system. A dry cold front is forecast to arrive in its wake
on Thursday morning.

High pressure is anticipated to build down into our region from
the Great Lakes for Thursday night into Friday.

A warm front is expected to lift toward our region from the
southwest and south on Saturday. Clouds will likely be on the
increase and there is a chance of rain in the afternoon, mainly
across the northern part of our area.
