National Weather Service Bismarck ND
636 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022
.UPDATE…
Issued at 636 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022
A cold front is draped southwest-northeast just north of the
International Border in southeast Saskatchewan, marked by an
increase in cloud cover via nighttime satellite imagery, a few
observations of breezy northwest winds, and some isolated radar
returns with a few lightning strikes. This activity has been
relatively consistent through the early morning hours although has
diminished just a bit the closer it gets to North Dakota. Recent
runs of high-res guidance keep any convection to a minimum through
the morning and into the late afternoon before temperatures warm
up enough for showers and a few isolated thunderstorms to
potentially develop. Our main message is 60 mph wind gusts and
hail up to the size of quarters, but thinking wind will be the
main threat. Made some adjustments to sky cover in line with
upstream clouds visible on satellite, otherwise going forecast
looks good.

.SHORT TERM…(Today and tonight)
Issued at 337 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022
The short term is highlighted by hot temperatures and a slight
chance for isolated strong to severe thunderstorms across parts of
central North Dakota this afternoon.
Early this morning, the synoptic pattern was characterized by a
deep closed low centered over northeast Minnesota, a broad high
over the Desert Southwest, and northwest flow over the Dakotas
between these two features. A broad surface high was centered
over western South Dakota, but a modest pressure gradient between
this and the attendant surface low over northern Minnesota has
kept winds breezy in our far eastern counties. Skies are mostly
clear with morning lows expected to be in the mid 50s to mid 60s.
The main feature of interest today will be a surface trough
with a weak cold front that is oriented generally southwest-
northeast and is located in southern Saskatchewan as of 8 UTC.
The main impacts from this trough will be breezy northwest winds
and a slight chance for showers and a few isolated thunderstorms
in central North Dakota this afternoon. Guidance is advertising
MLCAPE around 1000 J/kg and bulk shear around 30-40 knots. Overall
the environment looks supportive of strong to severe storms, with
primarily a wind threat from inverted V soundings and DCAPE over
1000 J/kg. Since forcing is only marginal, these storms are
expected to be pretty isolated.
High temperatures will range from the upper 70s in the far
northwest, where the front will reach first, to the lower 90s in
the south central and James River Valley. Expect partly cloudy
skies central and east, and mostly sunny skies west. Chances for
showers and thunderstorms end this evening with winds diminishing
and overnight lows in the 50s.
.LONG TERM…(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 337 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022
Hot and mostly dry conditions are expected Thursday and Friday
before temperatures cool down closer to normal and on and off
chances for thunderstorms return.
A stout upper high will be located over the Four Corners Region to
end the work week, with northwest flow aloft over the Dakotas on
Thursday as a closed low propagates east over the northern Canadian
Prairies. Broad surface high pressure over the region will lead to
mostly sunny skies on Thursday, with a low level thermal ridge
warming temperatures from the lower 80s north central to the lower
90s southwest. There are hints at a weak wave traversing the
cyclonic flow with long range CAMS producing an isolated
thunderstorm or two in the southern James River Valley, so we are
carrying a slight chance of thunderstorms during the afternoon
hours.
Friday will be the hottest day of the next week as the thermal ridge
becomes more centered overhead. 850mb temperatures of 25 to 28 C in
southern North Dakota will translate to highs in the low to mid 90s
generally along and south of Interstate 94, with highs in the mid
to upper 80s elsewhere. Chances for showers and thunderstorms begin
Friday evening but become higher and more widespread through the
night and into Saturday morning, as an upper shortwave and
attendant cold front approach and move through the forecast area.
Generally zonal flow should persist through the weekend, with
highs only in the lower 70s to lower 80s on Saturday in the post-
frontal air mass. Sunday will be a bit warmer, and blended
guidance produces low chances PoPs both these days, although
these are likely from weak, low predictability waves moving
through the mean flow.
To start next work week, ensemble members are in general agreement
regarding the overall idea of strong ridging building across British
Columbia into the Pacific Northwest, but there are still a variety
of solutions regarding the amplitude and thus what downstream flow
will look like over the region. The latest NBM produces temperatures
near to even slightly below average by midweek, with CIPS extended
analogs also showing near normal temperatures.

.AVIATION…(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning)
Issued at 636 AM CDT Wed Jul 20 2022
VFR conditions expected at all terminals through the TAF period. A
cold front will move south through the area today, with breezy
west winds becoming northwesterly behind it. Showers and a few
thunderstorms are possible, with KJMS the most likely terminal
that could be impacted, although too low of confidence to include
with this update. Winds and chances for precipitation diminish
after 00Z.
